Heidi Adkins

Pet Dog Trainer

Hey! I’m Heidi.

My love for dogs started with my first personal dog, Myla, when I was 13. She was a black Shepherd mix that could absolutely do no wrong. When you think of your ideal dog that never needed any work, that was her. Devastatingly, she passed away at the young age of two. No other dog could ever replace her, but I’m the type of person who can’t live without a dog, so I went on the search for a new companion. This is when my current dog, Sherlock, came into my life.

Compared to Myla, Sherlock was a complete mess. For reference, a reactive Husky mix who didn’t care what I had to say about literally ANYTHING. He is where I gained my love of training. I worked by myself with the help of YouTube and Instagram videos to find ways to improve his behavior. Overtime, while he became an incredible dog, I found myself thriving on the process of training dogs.

During this time, I took any opportunity to work with dogs that I could! I was in an animal science program the entire time I was in high school, eventually becoming a certified vet assistant through the program. I also worked at a vet clinic for over a year, learning everything I could about animal science. Throughout all of this, I took any opportunity I could to train family and friends dogs. This eventually led to me working at my first REAL training job. I truly loved every second of working with dogs while I was there. I got exposed to many different types of training as well. One type I really took an interest in was protection sports. Very soon after starting, I got my very first protection sports dog, a Belgian Turveren who I named Sett.

I eventually decided to go to school to become certified in dog training at Highland’s School for Dog Trainers, where I spent three months working with even more dogs. This all led me to K9 Summit. I’m so absolutely in love with the process of dog training and want to learn absolutely everything I can about it. My goal is to help others form healthy relationships with their dogs and see how incredibly special that bond can be.“
